Title: Using Technology to Blend Teaching and Basic Research
Using Technology to Blend Teaching and Basic Research

"Research-oriented instruction emphasizes the central purpose of science--inquiry". When students conduct their own research it can help the students become more perceptive. This article discusses a program called CHANCE, a program that's based on scientific teaching and train high school teachers to be more like scientists and then develop tools for their own classrooms. CHANCE stands for Connecting Humans And Nature in the Costa Rican Environment. The program has students examine a certain topic. Then, the students collect, record and analyze real data that's simulated by the program so that they can perform calculations and form conclusions. The last portion of the program has students examine real life situations and draw conclusions about how to connect their findings to real-life situations. These three sections, or modules, can be altered by the teacher to fit his or her needs.

This program helps students 'make the connection between inquiry processes and the products that result from inquiry, such as theories, models, and explanations." This program also allows students to move from lower to higher level questions depending on their needs. CHANCE also allows students to feel like real scientists, where they can record data and then come back to the program to analyze their findings.
